School readiness

Routines, self-care, communication and confidence matter alongside early learning.

Useful skills to practise

  • simple dressing and tidying personal items
  • toileting and hand washing with growing independence
  • asking an adult for help and explaining basic needs
  • taking turns and following short routines

Make the transition predictable

Gradually align sleep and meal times with the school schedule. Talk about what a school day looks like and visit the setting when possible.

Readiness is broader than academics

Curiosity, communication, self-care and participating in routines are important foundations. Reading and writing are not the only measures of readiness.
