Prenatal care: what routine visits are for

Regular prenatal care is used to follow your health, your baby’s growth and issues that may need earlier attention.

What usually happens

Visits commonly include blood pressure, weight and symptom review, with additional blood, urine, ultrasound or screening tests scheduled according to gestational age and local guidance.

Why timing matters

Some checks are useful only within particular pregnancy windows. Keep your scheduled visits and ask your own maternity team which tests apply to you; schedules differ by country, medical history and pregnancy risk.

Contact your maternity team promptly if

  • you have significant bleeding, persistent severe abdominal pain or suspected fluid leakage;
  • you notice a marked reduction in fetal movement after you have established a usual pattern;
  • you develop severe headache, vision changes, breathing difficulty, fainting or rapidly worsening symptoms.
This page does not replace your own prenatal care plan. Emergency or rapidly worsening symptoms require direct medical assessment.
