Safe sleep basics
- place babies on their back for every sleep;
- use a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet;
- keep pillows, loose blankets, bumpers and soft toys out of the sleep area.
What can be normal
Newborn day-night rhythms are immature, so short sleep periods and night waking are expected. Consistent bedtime cues, daytime light and a low-stimulation night environment can gradually support a routine.
Get urgent help if
Your baby has pauses in breathing, turns blue, is unusually difficult to wake, or appears to be in respiratory distress.
Safe-sleep recommendations apply to naps as well as night sleep.
